Big and doable opportunities

- Are you an AAUW member with leadership skills and desire to bring AAUW Mission and goals to life by serving on one of Wisconsin's Boards or Commissions? If so check out the Office of the Governor Boards & Commissions web page: http://www.wisgov.state.wi.us/section.asp?linkid=275&locid=19 Notice all of the options and information needed, contact the chair to discuss the committee expectations, and then submit your application.

BREAKING through BARRIERS: Happy New Year!
What great newsletters I am receiving from some of you for your branches! Members are helping women get their college education. Other women have what they need to be safe and comfortable after they have had the courage to escape abuse are also receiving help from some branches. You are advocating for more women to run for office and for all of us to be informed citizens. Besides timely issues presenters and discussion, Racine's offerings include small groups for investors, stitchery, reading and discussing books and eating, culture and cuisine, gardening, gourmet, Great Decisions, walkers and talkers. There is certainly something for everyone.
Branch news helps in answering the questions of Dutch friends, made on the AAUW-VVAO exchange trip we took to The Netherlands. Their organization is made up of only university, not college, graduates. One has asked, "When (if) education requirement for membership is abolished, will you then still keep the name AAUW?"
Our answer is, "Yes. Whether someone has their degree yet or not, the value of education is still apparent. Continuing to strive for our long established reputation of "advancing equity for women and girls though advocacy education and research," we will use the acronym without the need to explain the origin of the initials. There are so many ways that we can live up to our value promise, "By joining AAUW, you belong to a community that breaks through barriers so all women have a fair chance."
AAUW New Year 2009-2010
AAUW is off to an exciting new year! I have been enjoying getting to know the members I have met and look forward to meeting more.
Looking forward to visiting as many branches as possible, I hope that branches can join with neighboring branches when possible either at the same meeting or in times that work close enough together to help cut down on the number of trips. Just E-mail me with your requests at marabill1@msn.com
Changes with LAF
Since LAF has been folded into the EF, there have been changes:
- to include workplace issues outside of high education.
- to give more attention to landmark cases and phase out support for individual plaintiffs.
- to continue outreach on campuses.
- to put Progress in Equity and Speaking Out for Justice awards on hiatus.
For more information see “LAF briefing” on www.aauw.org.
Value Promise
By joining AAUW, we belong to a community that breaks through educational and economic barriers so that all women have a fair chance.
