"Doing Diversity" Initiative
AAUW-Wisconsin “Doing Diversity” Initiative
Goal: Diversity within the actual membership reflects AAUW Mission and Diversity Statements.
AAUW Mission
AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research.
AAUW Diversity Statement
In principle and practice, AAUW values and seeks diverse membership. There shall be no barriers to full participation in the organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability or class.
The “Doing Diversity” Initiative is about embracing and “doing” diversity. About looking within each Branch and finding the diversity that exists within. About looking outward to the surrounding community and seeing what diversity is therein. About looking beyond the surrounding community to the diversity within the state. In instances where diversity in the community is not reflected within the AAUW Branch membership, members must entertain the question, “Why Not?” Are there barriers to women from one subpopulation or another acquiring education? Are there barriers to membership that the branch itself has erected? The initiative asks branch members to go into the community and find the answers. The initiative further asks that if a community lacks diversity, the branch be responsible for finding out why and in what ways is the community impacted by a lack of diversity? Embracing diversity means reaching out for understanding and it means changing the community in the process.
The AAUW state diversity committee will assist your exploration by providing questions to guide branch and community dialogue, by pointing to resources available through AAUW and others, by sharing successful approaches and by providing moral support for your efforts.
Let’s explore how we can use our “Doing Diversity” Initiative to develop a vital and inclusive solutions network.
